INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORIES AND ADVOCACY

The available reports about the institutional repository community suggest that the main challenge facing IRs is faculty participation with regard to providing content. The belief that once an IR has been set up the research community will willingly engage and provide content is not feasible. One of the basic requirements for successful implementation of an IR is continuous advocacy to raise awareness of the importance and benefits of the IR to the research community and secure the support of senior management of the respective institutions. Without sustained advocacy, the IR cannot expand and the purpose for its establishment will be defeated.
